Air conditioners are the most power consuming device in residential appliances. Around 50% of our electricity consumption is from space cooling or heating. Selecting most efficient AC’s & using it in a strategic way will give you a good saving on your pocket. Here are few tips to start with.
1.Choose the right energy efficient star rated AC
The star rating of an AC helps in estimating the cooling efficiency of an air-conditioner. This star rating is provided for customer awareness by BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency.)
The highest star rating of an air conditioner is 5, and the lowest star rating is 1. A 5-star air conditioner will cool your room in the most efficient manner compared to a 1 or 2 Star Rated air conditioner. Simply put, a 5-star AC to cool a room faster, while using less electricity than a 1 or 2-star AC.

2.Correct Installation
Correct positioning & Air flow angle will provide you better cooling & efficiency with lower energy loss.
3. Lower Air leakage chances
Make sure your room is air tight & there is no leakage of air through doors, windows, roofs , cutouts etc to avoid energy loss.
4. Use Curtains & avoid direct sunlight in the room
Direct sunlight will create huge impact on cooling, Use curtains or other shadings like films on your glass windows.
5. Keep heat generating appliances off
If not needed than try to keep heat generating appliances like TV, computers, fridge ,ovens , lights switched off to decrease load on your ac. This load might be not high but it will create some impact on your cooling efficiency.
6.Keep the temperature between 22 to 25 deg C
As per study 24 degree C temp is suitable for human comfort. Lowering temperature by each degree will cost you 6% more electricity. Hence, setting a temperature lower than necessary is not required. Also setting lower temperature will increase load on your compressor.
Setting the temperature between 20 to 25 oC will stop the AC from working overtime and save you from high energy bills.
7. Set Sleep timer at night
Temperature at night are already low outside. No need to keep your AC ‘ON’ full night. Set timer to switch AC ‘OFF’ after 1 or 2 hours of your going to bed. It will cool your room enough to give you good night sleep. You can keep your fan ‘ON’ so not to feel sort of air flow.
8.Regular Maintenance
Here’s one more awesome tip to reduce your air conditioning bill over summer. Ensure your air conditioning unit is regularly maintained and that the filter is either replaced or cleaned to maintain optimum efficiency. A dirty filter makes any air conditioning unit work harder, meaning more electricity and higher energy costs.
